ShitDogPunk Jazz Improv: Three guys from Colchester improvising their way from one chaotic disc(h)ord to another
Bass: Duf M - founding member of Swivelman
Keys: Phil Pain - founding member of Hobo Chang / Wicked Ravens and many other bands
Drums: Jonny - founding member of Swivelman
Duf and Jonny have played together for many years, first playing in a post grunge rock band where they found a connection and love of improvisational conversation within music. They then leaned into the jazz vibe with “the secret project” fronted by violin and piano while Jonny and Duf continued to push their dynamic range explorations.
After heading back to grunge/rock as a two piece with Swivelman, Duf and Jonny finally gave up writing songs altogether and focused solely on improv. Wanting to fill out the harmony (or disharmony) within the music Jonny said to Duf, “there couldn’t possibly be someone eccentric enough out there that would want to join us?” Duf reassured Jonny that “they will find us” and after a few months jamming as a two piece Phil Pain arrived.
They agreed that they wouldn’t discuss what they was going to play, no choosing a key, nor tempo, nor timing, in fact, they decided, why don’t we purposefully avoid playing the predictable and, in attempting to go as far away from each other as possible, they would inevitably have to meet in unison without contrivance or cliché.
Shit Dog was born, very uncomfortably, and continues down the birth canal with awkward contractions.
